How do I know which bus stop to use?

Buses usually stop every 400 metres at posted signs, similar to the one shown here.

At major stops, bus route and timetable information signs show the numbers, names and descriptions of routes that stop at the stop. Longer bus stops will have different departure points for each service. These signs indicate the place to wait.

How do I make sure I catch the right bus?

The destination sign above the bus windshield shows the route number and destination. If the bus approaching your stop is the one you want, remain on the curb and indicate to the bus driver, by a clear wave of your arm, that you intend to board.

How do I get on board the bus?

Enter the bus from the front door. Enter bus on the left hand side of the doorway, beware of passengers alighting from the bus on the right hand side.

Some buses will have steps, please enter the bus with care.

How do I pay my bus fare?

All buses accept cash for payment of fares. Exact change is appreciated but small notes can usually be accepted, and change given. The driver will accept your payment as you board the bus.

Most bus cash fares are charged on the distance you wish to travel. Distance based stage points are used to calculate the fare charged. Stage points are set at specific points along a bus route, approximately every four kilometres, often at a point of interest such as a local shopping centre.

If your journey travels across a stage point then the fare increases.

For instance if you were to make a journey from Central Auckland City to Manukau City you pass through stage points at Newmarket, the Harp of Erin, Otahuhu and Hunters Corner. Therefore the total number of stages travelled is five.

You can also purchase a range of passes and multi ride tickets, depending on the bus operator. These can be purchased from ticket agents as well as on the bus.

What do I do when I am on board the bus?

If you are first on a bus with a queue of people behind you, please take a seat to the rear of the bus. If you are the last in the queue, or the only person boarding the bus, please take the first available seat.

This allows the bus to carry on with the journey as soon as is possible after you board the bus. Generally, the bus will not move until you are seated.

If no seats are available, please stand carefully, supporting yourself by the easily located handles on the seats, pillars, roof rails or straps. Please move to the rear of the bus to allow more people to board the bus.

Can I eat, drink or smoke on the bus?

No eating, drinking or smoking is allowed on buses at any time, so that other passengers can travel in comfort.

Can I put my feet on the seats?

We ask that passengers please do not rest their feet on the seats.

How do I signal the bus to stop?

When you wish to get off the bus at the next stop, pull the cord or press the bus stop button. Cords are located at the top of the windows, buttons on pillars or on the wall beside the seat.

Please ensure that you allow enough time, when pulling the cord or pushing the button, for the driver to stop smoothly and safely at your requested stop.

How do I get off the bus?

Please use the rear door of the bus, where practical, to exit the bus (except school buses where all students must use the front door to exit).
